Spirit Safe
Why This Training Matters
Taking this class isn't just about meeting a legal requirement. It's a practical risk management tool for the business. Proper training can reduce insurance costs, protect your liquor license, and significantly lower the risk of costly fines, lawsuits, and criminal penalties for both you and your employer
Our Spirit Safe alcohol safety class teaches bartenders and servers how to serve alcohol responsibly, prevent intoxication, and avoid legal liability. The curriculum typically covers four core areas: alcohol laws and liability, checking identification, recognizing intoxication, and intervening in difficult situations.
CurriculumÂ
-
Alcohol Laws & Legal Responsibilities: This covers the legal framework you must operate within. Key topics include understanding criminal vs. civil liability, Dram Shop laws (which allow third parties to sue an establishment for injuries caused by an intoxicated patron), and the specific penalties for serving minors or intoxicated persons.
-
Checking Identification: This focuses on age compliance. You learn to recognize acceptable forms of ID (such as a valid, unexpired driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID) and how to spot fake or altered IDs. The curriculum also covers how to properly verify the photo and details match the person.
-
Evaluating Intoxication: This module covers the physiology of alcohol, including how it affects the body and behavior. You learn to recognize behavioral cues of intoxication, such as slurred speech, loss of coordination, or aggressive behavior, and understand concepts like Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).
-
Handling Difficult Situations & Intervention: This is about practical application. You are trained in service refusal techniques and de-escalation strategies to handle situations confidently and professionally when you must cut someone off or deny a sale. Some programs use frameworks like the FEAR model (Focus, Evaluate, Act, Record) or a three-step intervention model to structure these responses
